{"id":248637,"date":"2006-01-24T08:11:32","date_gmt":"2006-01-24T13:11:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2006\/01\/delay-in-extradition-case"},"modified":"2006-01-24T08:11:32","modified_gmt":"2006-01-24T13:11:32","slug":"delay-in-extradition-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2006\/01\/delay-in-extradition-case","title":{"rendered":"Delay In Extradition Case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The seven men fighting extradition to the United States to face drug charges will have to wait until February 28 to learn if their constitutional rights were violated.  <\/p>\n<p>Trevor Roberts, Sheldon Moore, Brian and Lynden Deal, Devroy Moss, Shanto Curry and Gordon Newbold appeared before Magistrate Carolita Bethel on Monday, expecting a report from the Chief Justice on a number of constitutional infringement issues.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Magistrate Bethel, Chief Justice Sir Burton Hall informed her that he had assigned a Supreme Court judge to the case and that a report would be ready for review within 30 days. <\/p>\n<p>She remanded the men to Her Majesty&#8217;s Prison until then.<\/p>\n<p>The defence attorneys, Paul Moss, Maurice Glinton and Jerome Roberts, are challenging the Listening Devices Act, which gives the Commissioner of Police the authority to permit recordings of private conversations.<\/p>\n<p>They are also questioning the validity of the men&#8217;s arrest, based on the stipulations in the search warrants.<\/p>\n<p>Magistrate Bethel ruled earlier this month that the telephone recordings of the seven men were admissible as evidence, shooting down arguments to the contrary by the men&#8217;s attorneys.<\/p>\n<p>An earlier ruling of the Supreme Court had determined that the extradition treaty between the Bahamas and The United States was null and void.<\/p>\n<p>But that was overturned by the court of appeal with lawyers attempting to have the Privy Council grant a stay of the Appellate court&#8217;s decision.<\/p>\n<p><small>By: Stephen Gay, The Bahama Journal<\/small><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More delays as Bahamian government appears to be conspiring with allegedly corrupt lawyers and judges to thwart extradition agreement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"rop_custom_images_group":[],"rop_custom_messages_group":[],"rop_publish_now":"initial","rop_publish_now_accounts":{"facebook_10223285771444175_51037792744":""},"rop_publish_now_history":[],"rop_publish_now_status":"pending","footnotes":""},"categories":[12],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-248637","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-headlines"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/248637","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=248637"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/248637\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=248637"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=248637"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=248637"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
