{"id":248986,"date":"2006-03-07T10:07:50","date_gmt":"2006-03-07T15:07:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2006\/03\/commonwealth-games-rocked-by-withdrawals"},"modified":"2006-03-07T10:07:50","modified_gmt":"2006-03-07T15:07:50","slug":"commonwealth-games-rocked-by-withdrawals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2006\/03\/commonwealth-games-rocked-by-withdrawals","title":{"rendered":"Commonwealth Games Rocked by Withdrawals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>The Commonwealth Games was robbed of two of its biggest drawcards on Tuesday when Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe and English marathon world champion Paula Radcliffe both pulled out.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Thorpe told a news conference in Sydney that he had succumbed to a mystery illness that had plagued him for almost a month before Radcliffe&#8217;s husband released a statement in Britain saying she was withdrawing because of a bruised foot.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The absence of the duo is certain to have come as a massive blow to the competition organisers with Queen Elizabeth II due to the open the March 15-26 Games in Melbourne in a little over a week.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>A host of big-name athletes had already withdrew, including Australia&#8217;s long-distance swimmer Grant Hackett and England&#8217;s dual Olympic-champion Kelly Holmes, who announced her retirement last year after previously saying she planned to compete.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Debbie Ferguson of the Bahamas and Kim Collins of St Kitts and Nevis, winners of the blue-riband sprints at Manchester in 2002, are also expected to announce their withdrawals in the coming days.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Canada&#8217;s former Olympic triathlon champion Simon Whitfield is also out, as is New Zealand rugby winger Doug Howlett, while Kirsty Coventry, the outstanding swimmer at last year&#8217;s world championships in Montreal, is unable to compete because of Zimbabwe&#8217;s withdrawal from the Commonwealth.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><B>Biggest Shock<\/B><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The high-profile withdrawals followed an announcement by organisers earlier in the week that they still had almost 400,000 tickets to sell despite the cost of the Games blowing out to A$1.1 billion (US$827 million) from the original budget of A$697 million.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Thorpe&#8217;s withdrawal was the biggest shock.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The five-time Olympic gold medallist is a sporting superstar in Australia and news of his announcement was broadcast live on national television.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>&#8220;It was difficult coming to terms with not being able to compete but in the end it was the only decision I could come to,&#8221; Thorpe explained.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Radcliffe won the 5,000m gold medal at the last Commonwealth Games in Manchester and was entered for the 10,000m in Melbourne but injured her foot when she hit a rock in training.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>&#8220;It has reared up again and we feel it would be too much of an unnecessary risk, to compete in Melbourne,&#8221; her husband and manager Gary Lough said.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><SMALL>By Julian Linden, Reuters<\/SMALL><\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Debbie Ferguson of the Bahamas is also expected to announce her withdrawal in the coming days.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"rop_custom_images_group":[],"rop_custom_messages_group":[],"rop_publish_now":"initial","rop_publish_now_accounts":{"facebook_10223285771444175_51037792744":""},"rop_publish_now_history":[],"rop_publish_now_status":"pending","footnotes":""},"categories":[12],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-248986","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-headlines"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/248986","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=248986"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/248986\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=248986"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=248986"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=248986"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
