Ambassador Amos Tincani, head of the European Commission’s delegation to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, expressed concern that pockets of nationalism were appearing in the globalisation process.<\/p>\n
He said certain economies appeared to be trying to isolate themselves from the global thrust toward trade liberalisation.<\/p>\n
While recognising the right of countries to protect their local industries, Tincani described the recent furore in the United States over a Dubai company taking over operations at six major American ports, and the opposition surrounding the failed attempt by a China state company to buy American oil giant Unocal last year, as “gut reactions”.<\/p>\n
The European official made these observations as he spoke at the recent graduation ceremony for the first four-week certificate in international trade policy programme put on by the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill.<\/p>\n
