{"id":25498,"date":"2012-09-11T08:53:13","date_gmt":"2012-09-11T12:53:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=25498"},"modified":"2012-09-11T08:53:51","modified_gmt":"2012-09-11T12:53:51","slug":"plp-criticised-over-crime-wave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2012\/09\/plp-criticised-over-crime-wave","title":{"rendered":"PLP Criticised Over Crime Wave"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_15097\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15097\" style=\"width: 221px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15097 \" title=\"bahamas-crime\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/bahamas-tourism-crime.jpg\" alt=\"crime in The Bahamas\" width=\"221\" height=\"146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/bahamas-tourism-crime.jpg 276w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/bahamas-tourism-crime-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/bahamas-tourism-crime-250x165.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15097\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crime in the Bahamas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Free National Movement (FNM) Leader Dr. Hubert Minnis said in a statement yesterday Bahamians are disillusioned with the government\u2019s empty promises to solve the country\u2019s crime problem.<\/p>\n<p>Minnis\u2019 comments came nearly a week after Prime Minister Perry Christie promised to \u201credouble\u201d the government\u2019s crime fighting strategies after a spate of murders and armed robberies.<\/p>\n<p>Minnis said the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) is \u201clong on talk but short on action\u201d when it comes to crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat said, the governing party continues to use its magical numbers machine, its fancy talk and blatant storytelling to advance the view that Urban Renewal 2.0 is a panacea, that they held and still have all the answers to the crime problem and that they, the PLP, have worked miracles,\u201d Minnis said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that May \u2013 the month the PLP assumed office \u2013 was the bloodiest month on record for the year.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2012, 21 murders were recorded, the most ever recorded in a single month.<\/p>\n<p>He also questioned the status of two of the government\u2019s proposed crime fighting strategies, Operation Cease Fire and Project Safe Bahamas.<\/p>\n<p>He added that people are becoming increasingly vulnerable to attack by wearing gold jewelry or socializing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrankly, we\u2019re seeing a crime wave that is evidence of a worrying trend, especially when one considers that Bahamians are afraid to even wear a piece of jewelry or play a game of dominoes without looking over their shoulders, without being traumatized by the fear of crime,\u201d he said, referring to the circumstances surrounding two recent murders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow woeful is it when 63-year-old Ernest Hepburn, a senior citizen, is killed on his porch for his gold chain or when a youngster, in his late 20s, is brutally murdered as he\u2019s engaged in a game of dominoes with his friends?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Minnis also hit out at Minister of Education, Science and Technology Jerome Fitzgerald for saying that armed police officers would be allowed to patrol public schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe school is a place where learning is supposed to occur, where we groom and develop a dutiful citizenry,\u201d Minnis said. \u201cThe school should never be morphed into a militarized zone due to knee-jerk tokenism, or political expediency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Fitzgerald said school police officers who are authorized to carry guns will be able to take the weapons onto the campuses.<\/p>\n<p>Minnis also criticized the PLP\u2019s flagship crime fighting strategy, Urban Renewal 2.0, as a program that has done nothing more than knock down a few houses.<\/p>\n<p>Minnis also questioned when the government would place a greater emphasis on child protection laws, witness protection and explain how Swift Justice would be implemented.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><em>Source: Taneka Thompson,<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenassauguardian.com\" target=\"_blank\">The Nassau Guardian<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bahamians are disillusioned with the PLP\u2019s empty promises to solve the crime problem.
