{"id":26837,"date":"2012-10-11T08:25:54","date_gmt":"2012-10-11T12:25:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=26837"},"modified":"2012-10-11T08:26:10","modified_gmt":"2012-10-11T12:26:10","slug":"bahamas-forum-on-u-s-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2012\/10\/bahamas-forum-on-u-s-elections","title":{"rendered":"Bahamas Forum On U.S. Elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-26842\" title=\"us-elections\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/us-elections.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/us-elections.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/us-elections-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Under the College&#8217;s theme for 2012 &#8220;Anticipating New Horizons,&#8221; Sojourner-Douglass College (SDC), in partnership with the United States Embassy will host a luncheon forum focusing on the upcoming United States Presidential and Congressional elections.<\/p>\n<p>The special forum will be held at the British Colonial Hilton on October 30, 2012.\u00a0 The topic of the lunchtime discussion will be \u201cThe November 6th U.S. Elections: What policies are Bahamians hoping for?\u00a0 What policies should The Bahamas expect from the winner?\u201d Deborah Bartlett, CEO of the GEMS Radio Network will moderate what is expected to be a lively discussion featuring Mr. John Armstrong, acting Deputy Chief of Mission from the U.S. Embassy and Mr. Phillip Galanis, Accountant and former Parliamentarian.<\/p>\n<p>As the American election campaign heats up, questions regarding how The Bahamas should prepare for a continuation of the presidency under Barack Obama or what changes could come with a Mitt Romney presidency occupy the minds of many Bahamian policy makers, business persons and members of civil society.\u00a0 The October 30 forum will provide a unique opportunity to hear the views of two noted political analysts on the major issues impacting the U.S.-Bahamas relationship including migration, trafficking, education, energy and environmental policy among other matters.\u00a0 Mr. Armstrong will also provide an overview of the U.S. electoral process at the state and federal levels.<\/p>\n<p>Organizers from the College and the U.S. Embassy are expecting that a wide cross-section of citizens, residents and students will take advantage of this opportunity to hear the viewpoints just days before Americans go to the polls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are excited about this partnership between our College and the U.S. Embassy,\u201d said SDC Executive Director, the Honorable Theresa Moxey-Ingraham. \u201cAn important aspect of our mandate is to serve the local community through fostering opportunities for dialogue and the exchange of ideas.\u00a0 We believe that better understanding and appreciation for the value of international cooperation are enhanced when colleges and other educational institutions take the lead and work with other agencies for the greater good of the entire community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Embassy spokesperson, Erica Thibault believes that there is a natural synergy between the Embassy and Sojourner-Douglass College due to the educational institution\u2019s roots in the U.S. and its focus on community outreach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis initiative by Sojourner-Douglass College is significant because it will provide a unique platform for the exchange of ideas as this exciting and crucial election year in America draws to a close,\u201d said Mrs. Thibault. \u201cWe sincerely hope that this is the first of many opportunities to partner with the College on public events that highlight the strength of the U.S.-Bahamas relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sojourner-Douglass College became an independent institution under Maryland law in 1980 and is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the Maryland Commission on Higher Education.
