On Saturday November 3rd, 61 paddlers set out in support of the Abaco Cancer Society and Friends of the Environment in the 2nd Annual Kayak Challenge.\u00a0 Organizers of the event were thrilled with the turnout of 17 paddle boarders and 44 kayakers just one week after Hurricane Sandy swept through the Abacos as a category 2 storm.<\/p>\n

Participants had 3 courses to choose from: 3 miles, 8 miles, or 15 miles that took then into and through the scenic tidal creeks of the Bight of Old Robinson, an area that is included in the proposed East Abaco Creeks National Park.\u00a0 Paddlers were blown away by the beauty of the tidal creeks and almost all of them extended their course in order to spend more time amongst the turtles, stingrays and sharks that were all around.\u00a0 There were originally 4 kayakers signed up for the 15 mile course but 17 people ended up completing the full 15 miles.<\/p>\n

As kayakers and paddle boarders returned to the Pete\u2019s Pub Beach, supporters cheered them, local band Fire and the Goat Peppers performed and Pete\u2019s Pub had one of their famous pig roasts.\u00a0 Cha Boyce, President of Friends of the Environment stated, \u201cThere is really no other event during the year that makes you feel this good.\u00a0 Having 61 people in the creeks this morning and watching their reaction was a special moment.\u00a0 This event is about healthy living, a healthy environment and bringing the community together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Funds from the event benefit both the Abaco Cancer Society and Friends of the Environment.\u00a0 Funds were raised through business sponsorships and by the participants raising individual sponsorships.\u00a0 Business sponsors included Abaco Groceries, Abaco Family Medicine, Abaco Petroleum, IE Imports, Marsh Harbour Exporters and Importers, Master Marine, and Treasure Cay Ltd.
