The announcement was made by BIFF Founder &amp; Executive Director Leslie Vanderpool.<\/p>\n<p>The Festival\u2019s prestigious Shining Star Award is given to an actor or actress whose noteworthy performances have put them on the path for elite and lasting stardom in the industry. Sydney Tamiia Poitier will be on hand for the special award tribute presentation on Saturday, December 8th at the Atlantis Theater on Paradise Island at 7pm.<\/p>\n<p>Commented Vanderpool, \u201c&#8221;Nobody embodies the spirit of BIFF\u2019s Shining Star Award more than Sydney Tamiia Poitier. She is one of the most gracious, exciting and multi-talented performer who excels in Film and TV, and we know the Bahamian community will embrace her and help us celebrate her past, current and, most certainly, future success. As anyone who has seen Sydney\u2019s collection performances can attest, Sydney is definitely one of the most gorgeous and talented actors who\u2019s star is shining brightly and rising rapidly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A graduate from New York University, Poitier was featured as one of People Magazine \u201c50 Most Beautiful People in 2001, Won Best Actress for \u201cNine Lives\u201d at the Lorcarno International Film Festival and nominated for Best Ensemble Cast for the Gotham Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Poitier appeared in a leading role in the film, \u201cDeath Proof,\u201d (2007) as character Jungle Julia, directed by Quentin Tarantino, co-starring Kurt Russell, Zoe Bell, Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Ferlito and Rose McGowan. Poitier also appeared in \u201cThe List\u201d (2007) as Cecile, which she was nominated for Outstanding Actress at the Image Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Sydney Tamiia Poitier has landed many TV Series and TV Movies such as \u201cPrivate Practice\u201d as Michelle; \u201cKnight Rider\u201d as Carrie Rivai; \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d as Deborah Fleiss; \u201cJoan Of Arcadia\u201d as Rebecca Askew; \u201cAbby\u201d as Abby Newman and \u201cFree Of Eden\u201d as Nicole Turner, where she Co-starred with her father Oscar Winner, Sidney Poitier.<\/p>\n<p>BIFF 2012 begins Thursday, December 6th in Nassau and runs through Sunday, December 9th.
