{"id":28488,"date":"2012-11-22T08:37:37","date_gmt":"2012-11-22T13:37:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=28488"},"modified":"2012-11-30T08:53:31","modified_gmt":"2012-11-30T13:53:31","slug":"parliament-to-mark-womens-suffrage-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2012\/11\/parliament-to-mark-womens-suffrage-anniversary","title":{"rendered":"Parliament To Mark Women&#8217;s Suffrage Anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2012\/11\/parliament-to-mark-womens-suffrage-anniversary-28488.html\/suffrage-2\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-28489\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-28489\" title=\"suffrage\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/suffrage.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/suffrage.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/suffrage-150x69.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/suffrage-250x115.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>A special parliamentary session to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Women\u2019s Suffrage Movement in the Bahamas will be held Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must continue to tell the story because so many young women do not know,\u201d said Minister of Social Services, Mrs Melanie Griffin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must make sure that we do our best to ensure that the legacy left behind by the Women Suffrage Movement does not die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Griffin was a guest speaker at a forum for police officers, reservists, and civilians in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Women\u2019s Suffrage Movement.<\/p>\n<p>Specially recognised were Sergeant 522 Anita Williams (first woman to join the police force), Inspector Dorothy Davis (first woman inspector), ACP Juanita Colebrooke (first woman assistant commissioner of police), Superintendent Allerdyce Strachan (first woman gazetted officer), and Superintendent Delmetta Turnquest (first woman finger print examiner).<\/p>\n<p>Attorney Marion Bethel gave a special presentation on the Women\u2019s Suffrage Movement.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Griffin said that Dr. Doris Johnson who represented women\u2019s suffrage at the time, was not allowed in the House of Assembly to present the petition on behalf of Bahamian women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut 50 years later (we), the women who stand on their shoulders, will make sure that that petition, that speech she wanted to make will have its day in the House of Assembly,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very proud to be able to do that and give it the prominence it needs and put it definitely in the records of the House of Assembly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A resolution paying tribute to the leaders of the women\u2019s suffrage is to be tabled in the House of Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a significant milestone for us,\u201d said Mrs. Griffin. \u201cIt is important for the country for us to know our history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She commended the contributions of those pioneering women police officers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFifty years ago there would have been no women on the police force,\u201d she said. \u201cOftentimes we take it for granted that what we do we have always been able to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important to celebrate (the achievements of women) because many of our young women do not know that we could not always be police officers or parliamentarians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is so much that women were not able to do but because of the struggle of (the Women\u2019s Suffrage Movement)\u2026they did it just so we could be where we are today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must make sure that we do our best to ensure that the legacy left behind by the Women\u2019s Suffrage Movement does not die.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir struggle was to get the vote. They did their part. We now have to do our part.
