{"id":29180,"date":"2012-12-11T08:36:24","date_gmt":"2012-12-11T13:36:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=29180"},"modified":"2012-12-11T08:48:17","modified_gmt":"2012-12-11T13:48:17","slug":"first-lego-league-comes-to-bahamas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2012\/12\/first-lego-league-comes-to-bahamas","title":{"rendered":"First Lego League Comes To The Bahamas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Six schools across The Bahamas will highlight their talent, creativity and scientific genius when they display the robots they have built to improve the lives of the elderly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-29181\" title=\"first-lego-league\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/first-lego-league.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/first-lego-league.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/first-lego-league-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Students from Thelma Gibson Primary; Walter Parker Primary, (Grand Bahama); NGM Major High School, (Long Island); CH Reeves Junior High; Genesis Academy and St. Andrews School are competing in the FIRST\u00ae LEGO\u00ae League tournament.\u00a0 This is a Qualifier Tournament and this year\u2019s theme is \u201cSenior Solutions\u201d.\u00a0 The tournament will be held on Saturday, Dec. 15 at the British Colonia Hilton.\u00a0 Bahamian students are competing for a chance to advance to the FIRST LEGO League State Championship in Orlando, Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, there are approximately 200,000 students (world-wide) participating in FLL\u00ae including Puerto Rico and Haiti, however this will be the first time the tournament will be held in The Bahamas. Bringing this tournament to The Bahamas was the idea of Laurena Finlayson, an educator and also Business Manager of MDR.<\/p>\n<p>Finlayson, is the local representative for FLL\u00ae, and is also a certified facilitator in the LEGO\u00ae Serious Play\u00ae methodology.\u00a0 She saw the positive effects of FIRST\u00ae LEGO\u00ae League at the LEGO\u00ae Ideas conference she attended in Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>At the conference Finlayson heard first hand testimonies from students who praised the tournament for helping them discover their voice, and making their learning process more effective. She spoke with teachers and coaches who agreed that using LEGO\u00ae and the FIRST\u00ae program had helped to transform ordinarily quiet students into dynamic leaders who received opportunities for college scholarships.\u00a0 Finlayson knew then that this type of program was exactly what we needed in The Bahamas. She stated that \u201cnot only would it develop their intellectual capacities, but it would help them to become well-rounded students with a desire to help their community, and develop a positive attitude toward teamwork, appreciation of ideas others, respect and true sportsmanship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FIRST\u00ae LEGO\u00ae League is a hands-on science, technology, engineering and math enrichment program that combines robotics with a research project that encourages scientific literacy. FIRST\u00ae stands for Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology and many of the students who have gone through this program since it began 14 years ago have found careers in scientific fields of study. Students, using \u201chand-knowledge\u201d design, build, test and program robots using LEGO\u00ae MINDSTORMS\u00ae technology to go through a LEGO\u00ae obstacle course designed to highlight and find solutions for real life challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Each team has spent the last two months building and programming their robots which, to overcome concepts from gerontology including, making it easier to walk, lift, carry, and move objects.<\/p>\n<p>Sponsors for the FIRST\u00ae LEGO\u00ae league include The Rotary Clubs of Nassau, BTC, BEC, Campbell Shipping Co.
