{"id":29485,"date":"2012-12-19T08:37:19","date_gmt":"2012-12-19T13:37:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=29485"},"modified":"2012-12-19T08:37:19","modified_gmt":"2012-12-19T13:37:19","slug":"credit-downgrade-a-wake-up-call","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2012\/12\/credit-downgrade-a-wake-up-call","title":{"rendered":"Credit Downgrade &#8216;A Wake Up Call&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2012\/12\/credit-downgrade-a-wake-up-call-29485.html\/sands-2\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-29486\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-29486\" title=\"sands\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/sands.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/sands.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/sands-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>The recent downgrade of the country\u2019s credit rating by Moody\u2019s should be seen as a \u201cwake up call\u201d for the country, said Baha Mar\u2019s Senior Vice President of Administration and External Relations Robert Sands yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Sands said while the news is serious he hopes the economy would be boosted once Baha Mar opens in late 2014.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think as a nation you have to be concerned about any reduction in the credit rating,\u201d Sands told The Nassau Guardian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not just about Baha Mar, but the country as a whole, but I think it\u2019s a wake up call for all of us to address this issue as a priority, make some structural adjustments, both from a fiscal and monetary policy going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, international credit ratings agency Moody\u2019s downgraded the country\u2019s credit rating from A3 to Baa1.<br \/>\nMoody\u2019s also said the country\u2019s economic outlook remains negative.<\/p>\n<p>The agency noted three factors for the downgrade: Limited growth prospects and weak recovery in tourism and construction; significant and rapid deterioration of the government\u2019s balance sheet exacerbated by a low revenue base, and high and rising levels of debt and weakening of debt sustainability relative to other countries.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the sober announcement, Sands said he believes the Christie administration will create policies necessary to buoy the economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the government will put in place and begin to work to put in place the initiatives to begin to turn this around,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are very hopeful though that an investment such as Baha Mar could be a catalyst to assist the government going forward once we are open with the creation of employment, the generation of new business, etc.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[This] will be of tremendous benefit to The Bahamas going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sands said the luxury development is still on target for a December 2014 finish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConstruction is going very well,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are meeting our timeframe. By February of next year we will celebrate our second anniversary and at that time we will do the capping off on all of the buildings, the roofs will be going on at that particular time. So the super structure would be totally out of the ground.
