{"id":31385,"date":"2013-02-08T09:24:05","date_gmt":"2013-02-08T14:24:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=31385"},"modified":"2013-02-08T09:24:05","modified_gmt":"2013-02-08T14:24:05","slug":"grant-house-avoiding-critical-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2013\/02\/grant-house-avoiding-critical-issues","title":{"rendered":"Grant: House Avoiding Critical Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2013\/02\/grant-house-avoiding-critical-issues-31385.html\/neko\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31386\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-31386\" title=\"neko\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/neko.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/neko.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/neko-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>Former Minister of Works Neko Grant yesterday questioned why the government would bring a resolution to Parliament requesting the establishment of a select committee to decide if parliamentarians need an increase in benefits and allowances.<\/p>\n<p>The committee would also probe the feasibility of constructing a new Parliament complex.<\/p>\n<p>Grant said while the present Parliament facilities and compensation to parliamentarians are lacking, there are more pertinent issues the government should focus on first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Speaker, people are hurting and we should be debating something more substantive,\u201d the Central Grand Bahama MP told the House of Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe the present murder count is up to 12 and that\u2019s an average of one every three days and so sir, with the many issues that affect us today, I thought we would have been giving focused attention to the subjects I mentioned \u2014 the foreclosures, the unemployment and the continuous rise in crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant said Parliament should focus on enriching the lives of the people its members were elected to serve and not looking to increase MPs\u2019 benefits, given the government\u2019s finances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this time can the public purse afford an additional allowance for ourselves?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are new hires that are continuing at exorbitant salaries, loyalist PLPs are being engaged on contracts, lofty contracts, retirees are being brought back at exorbitant salaries having received a handsome package on departure. I am told they continue to collect pensions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m being told that retirees are not being paid on time, so why, Mr. Speaker, are we giving focused attention on this resolution when we should be dealing with the challenges that face the people? For us to be debating this resolution is just unbelievable, it\u2019s just unthinkable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, MICAL MP V.
