{"id":32005,"date":"2013-02-22T09:03:34","date_gmt":"2013-02-22T14:03:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=32005"},"modified":"2013-02-22T10:03:03","modified_gmt":"2013-02-22T15:03:03","slug":"hbo-blasts-bahamas-over-copyright-failure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2013\/02\/hbo-blasts-bahamas-over-copyright-failure","title":{"rendered":"HBO Attacks Bahamas Over Copyright Negligence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2013\/02\/hbo-blasts-bahamas-over-copyright-failure-32005.html\/hbo\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32007\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-32007\" title=\"hbo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/hbo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/hbo.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/hbo-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>HBO, the United States&#8217; top pay-TV network, recently blasted the Bahamas for its \u201cpersistent failure\u201d to compensate for blatant copyright violations.<\/p>\n<p>In a written testimony submitted to the US Trade Representative\u2019s (USTR) Office\u2019s Special 301 hearing, HBO Latin America urged lawmakers in Washington to place the Bahamas back on its Special 301 Watch List.<\/p>\n<p>The testimony stated that HBO&#8217;s inability to obtain $600,000 from the Bahamas\u2019 Copyright Licensing Fund meant that the Bahamas was not only in violation of its obligations to the Berne Convention &#8211; which protects literary and artistic works &#8211; but also non-compliant with the World Trade Organisation&#8217;s (WTO) intellectual property standards.<\/p>\n<p>These violations could prove problematic, given that the Bahamas\u2019 is currently attempting to gain full WTO membership, and the issue is likely to be raised by the United States and other nations interested in trading with this country. For whatever reason, the government tends to let intellectual property standards continually slide onto the back burner.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter submitted to the USTR, HBO Latin America\u2019s attorneys said: \u201cThe Bahamas Copyright Royalty Tribunal\u2019s (CRT) persistent failure to distribute royalties to HBO LA for the transmission of its programming under the prior compulsory licensing regime constitutes a continuing violation of HBO LA\u2019s intellectual property rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a result, USTR should place the Bahamas back on the Special 301 Watch List.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tribune242.com\/news\/2013\/feb\/21\/hbo-blasts-bahamas-for-copyright-failure\/\">Original News Article<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HBO, the United States&#8217; top pay-TV network, recently criticised the Bahamas for its \u201cpersistent failure\u201d to compensate for blatant copyright violations.
