His piece of art depicted Dr. King holding a key which represented his message of freedom for all people regardless of race and how this message inspired his forefathers in their pursuit to secure an independent Bahamas.<\/p>\n<p>This is the seventh year that the U.S. Embassy has sponsored the nationwide contest to mark U.S. Black History Month.\u00a0 This year\u2019s theme \u201cDream Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.: Celebrating Forty Years of Bahamian Independence\u201d also included an art component in partnership with Antonius Roberts\u2019 Hillside Gallery to encourage high school students to express themselves artistically.\u00a0 The purpose of the contest was to encourage students to explore the life of American hero Dr. King and the impact of the civil rights movement on Bahamian independence.\u00a0 All high school students in The Bahamas in grades 10-12 were invited to participate.\u00a0 Seven of the eight art entries were created by St. Augustine\u2019s College students.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, Mr. Dinkelman praised Denzel for his insightful and inspirational piece and thanked each student who participated in this year\u2019s contest for embracing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s vision and for rediscovering the ties between the civil rights movements in The Bahamas and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The art students also received praise from artist Antonius Roberts, who served as the primary judge for the art contest.\u00a0 He recognized the students\u2019 creativity and applauded the dedication of their teacher Marco Mullings, who was his former student at The College of The Bahamas.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><em>By The US Embassy<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><em>Caption: During a special ceremony at SAC, U.S. Charg\u00e9 d\u2019Affaires John Dinkelman presented the U.S. Embassy\u2019s MLK Art Winner, Denzel Pratt with the grand prize an Apple iPad.
