{"id":33725,"date":"2013-03-29T19:31:15","date_gmt":"2013-03-29T23:31:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=33725"},"modified":"2013-03-29T19:31:15","modified_gmt":"2013-03-29T23:31:15","slug":"web-shops-openly-breaking-the-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2013\/03\/web-shops-openly-breaking-the-law","title":{"rendered":"Web Shops Openly Breaking The Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Web shops have provided no evidence for their \u201cbold assertion\u201d that they are in compliance with the Business Licence Act, the Government alleging they \u201copenly admitted, on numerous occasions and platforms\u201d, to being involved in illegal gambling.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on numerous sources to support the Government\u2019s argument that the Supreme Court should not grant an injunction preventing a web shop industry shut-down, Deirdre Clarke-Maycock, an attorney with the Attorney General\u2019s Office, said the Bahamian public\u2019s interest would be \u201cirreparably harmed\u201d if this happened.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that the companies &#8211; FML, Paradise Games, Percy\u2019s Web Cafe, Island Luck, Whatfall, Asue Draw and Chances Internet Services &#8211; claimed to collectively operate 134 web shops, Ms Clarke-Maycock said there were only \u201ca limited number of provisions\u201din the Business Licence Act that a company had to comply with.<\/p>\n<p>Effectively dismissing as insignificant the web shop industry\u2019s assertion that it was in compliance with the Business Licence Act, she alleged that a Ministry of Finance official, Joseph Mullings, was unable to confirm whether this was so.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on numerous public statements by the web shop operators, Ms Clarke-Maycock alleged: \u201cIt is clear that the various plaintiffs have openly admitted, on numerous occasions and on various platforms, that their business involves gambling, and that what is offered is inter alia the numbers game, as contemplated in the Lotteries and Gaming Act.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Web shops have \u201copenly admitted, on numerous occasions and platforms\u201d, to being involved in illegal gambling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":14,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"rop_custom_images_group":[],"rop_custom_messages_group":[],"rop_publish_now":"initial","rop_publish_now_accounts":{"facebook_10223285771444175_51037792744":""},"rop_publish_now_history":[],"rop_publish_now_status":"pending","footnotes":""},"categories":[12],"tags":[137,49],"class_list":["post-33725","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-headlines","tag-gambling","tag-law"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/33725","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/14"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=33725"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/33725\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=33725"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=33725"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=33725"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
