{"id":34424,"date":"2013-04-16T08:36:40","date_gmt":"2013-04-16T12:36:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=34424"},"modified":"2013-04-16T08:36:40","modified_gmt":"2013-04-16T12:36:40","slug":"christie-renews-concerns-over-port","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2013\/04\/christie-renews-concerns-over-port","title":{"rendered":"Christie Renews Concerns Over Port"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2013\/04\/christie-renews-concerns-over-port-34424.html\/christie-11\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-34425\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-34425\" title=\"christie\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/christie.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/christie.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/christie-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>Prime Minister Perry Christie, who once called the Arawak Cay port deal an \u201cabomination\u201d, said he is even more convinced now that the port has been completed.<\/p>\n<p>Christie said he is \u201cdisturbed\u201d by the port\u2019s proximity to eating establishments, describing the impact as being potentially \u201cunhealthy\u201d and \u201cintrusive\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But Opposition Leader Dr. Hubert Minnis defended the decision to relocate of the port yesterday, declaring that it was the \u201cright decision\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Christie said, \u201cThis is a very, very serious matter and I drew it to the attention of my ministerial colleagues who were sitting here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister made the comment while at Arawak Cay on Friday for former parliamentarian Charles Carter\u2019s 70th birthday celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m going to have a discussion with those who run this place because when they first said there was going to be a port here, the Ingraham government indicated that the traffic would be at night when things are down and in the wee hours of the morning,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone has ignored that now that [the deal is] done. \u201cIt\u2019s happening here and I can tell you it&#8217;s something that we have to be careful about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSitting here we have been constantly disturbed by the heavy trucks and heavy traffic coming from the port. And I knew a long time ago that this was the wrong place to put a port.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christie said his experience at Arawak Cay on Friday has helped him to reconfirm his position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It] helped me to inform public policy by giving me the experience of sitting here and seeing what happens to the people who are trying to eat as the dust comes from trucks which are uncovered&#8230; It\u2019s very difficult and it seems to be unhealthy,\u201d he said outside Frankie Gone Bananas, one of the restaurants at the Cay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe noise is an intrusion on people&#8217;s well being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arawak Cay Port Development Company (APD Limited) built the port on Arawak Cay after former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham reversed a plan the previous Christie administration had to locate the port in southwest New Providence.<\/p>\n<p>Minnis said he is not surprised by Christie\u2019s recent comments as he has made similar statements in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Minnis said the Ingraham administration negotiated a good deal for the Bahamian people as it relates to the port\u2019s relocation from Bay Street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would have done our work,\u201d he said at a press conference at the Free National Movement headquarters yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe feel that, that port is in the right place. We reduced the traffic on Bay Street&#8230;Traffic can move properly now.
