Friday May 10, 2013 has been declared World Lupus Day in The Bahamas. The official proclamation came from Perry G. Christie, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas as a result of efforts from Lupus 242, a local support group, to raise awareness in the country.<\/p>\n
On Friday, Bahamians will join others around the world as they recognize the impact the chronic autoimmune disease has on those living with lupus. An estimated 5.5 million persons globally live with the disease brought on by genetics, environment and hormonal imbalances in the body. Common symptoms include debilitating pain, fatigue and unexplained flare-ups impacting random parts of the body especially internal organs.<\/p>\n
Lupus 242 is urging Bahamians to P.O.P (Put On Purple) on Friday May 10, to raise awareness.<\/p>\n
\u201cPutting on purple is a simple way to show support for this cause. Whether it\u2019s a tie, a blouse or even purple shoes, we want to appeal to the general public, corporate Bahamas and schools to participate in this exercise on May 10,\u201d said Shonalee Johnson, group Vice President and Public Relations Officer.\u00a0 \u201cOn behalf of Lupus 242, I would like to thank the government of The Bahamas for making this official declaration. This is a global exercise and we want to do our part locally to stop and recognize the impact that lupus has on lives here in The Bahamas.\u201d<\/p>\n
In addition to the call to wear purple on May 10, the group is also selling purple \u201cCure Lupus in the 242\u201d wristbands and car bumper stickers.<\/p>\n
Events include, the Hope Floats (May 20, Whit-Monday), a balloon release ceremony in memory of those lost to lupus and a Purple Hat Tea Party Affair (Sunday May 26) at St. Matthew\u2019s Anglican Parish Hall.<\/p>\n
