{"id":38315,"date":"2013-08-16T08:30:06","date_gmt":"2013-08-16T12:30:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=38315"},"modified":"2013-08-16T08:41:24","modified_gmt":"2013-08-16T12:41:24","slug":"miami-protestors-halt-repatriation-to-cuba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2013\/08\/miami-protestors-halt-repatriation-to-cuba","title":{"rendered":"Miami Protestors Halt Repatriation To Cuba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37325\" title=\"cubans-abused-detention-center-bahamas\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/cubans-abused-detention-center-bahamas.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/cubans-abused-detention-center-bahamas.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/cubans-abused-detention-center-bahamas-150x107.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/cubans-abused-detention-center-bahamas-250x179.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Bahamas government Thursday started \u2014 then stopped \u2014 the repatriation of 24 undocumented Cuban migrants, including eight who have been offered asylum in Panama, according to a Miami group that has been supporting the Cubans.<\/p>\n<p>The 24 were told early Thursday that they were being returned to Cuba, handcuffed and put on buses at the Migrant Detention Center in Nassau, said Democracy Movement chief Ram\u00f3n Sa\u00fal Sanchez, who on Monday called off a hunger strike in favor of the migrants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe immediately contacted the U.S. and Panamanian government and others and just 15 minutes ago we learned the repatriation had been stopped and that the people are back in the center\u2019s dining room,\u201d he told El Nuevo Herald Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least we stopped the repatriation for now, although we retain the option of renewing the hunger strike,\u201d S\u00e1nchez said.<\/p>\n<p>But Sanchez said late Thursday that his group has been told the detainees will be repatriated on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The Cubans\u2019 status was scheduled be discussed Monday at a meeting of Bahamas Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister Fred Mitchell, Guillermo Cochez, former Panama ambassador to the Organization of American States, Miami lawyer Lorenzo Palomares and Miami banker Raymond Molina.<\/p>\n<p>Bahamian authorities are holding 50 undocumented Cubans at the migration center, some for as long as 11 months. Most were intercepted as they tried to make their way to the United States.
