{"id":38680,"date":"2013-08-26T09:10:21","date_gmt":"2013-08-26T13:10:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=38680"},"modified":"2013-08-26T09:10:21","modified_gmt":"2013-08-26T13:10:21","slug":"post-office-staff-to-relocate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2013\/08\/post-office-staff-to-relocate","title":{"rendered":"Post Office Staff To Relocate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2013\/08\/post-office-staff-to-relocate-38680.html\/office\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-38681\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-38681\" title=\"office\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/office.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/office.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/office-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/office-250x187.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>The government is preparing to relocate staff in the General Post Office building, which has had structural problems over the last several years, Minister of Transport and Aviation Glenys Hanna- Martin said.<\/p>\n<p>The decision was made after air condition challenges led to severe flooding in the building on East Hill Street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have made a determination as a matter of policy that we are moving people out of that post office,\u201d\u00a0 Hanna-Martin said.<\/p>\n<p>She said officials from the Ministry of Works assessed the building this week and identified challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been looking at alternate locations for the short to medium term establishment of general post office services which include the entire spectrum of service, including the savings bank, parcel post and also the mail sorting aspect of it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are hopeful that over the next few days a building will be identified and people will be redeployed from the General Post Office to new accommodations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In meantime, employees are working fewer hours, Hanna-Martin said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to limit the time they are in that building until we find alternate accommodations,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In February, post office employees claimed that a large concrete slab fell from the ceiling and nearly hit a worker.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Bahamas Public Service Union (BPSU) Secretary General S. J. Miller said the building posed \u201cserious health and safety problems\u201d for employees.<\/p>\n<p>Hanna-Martin acknowledged that the building has fallen into a state of disrepair over the years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe post office was built in the 1970s and it has gone through a process of deterioration and this is where we are now,\u201d she said. \u201cIt has become necessary to move the post office from that building to a new location.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hanna-Martin said there are also air conditioning issues at the Elizabeth Estates, South Beach and Grants Town post offices.<\/p>\n<p>As Ministry of Works officials work to address those issues, Hanna-Martin said the people employed at those offices are also working fewer hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can not require people to stay in conditions of that nature,\u201d she said. The General Post Office also houses the Office of the Attorney General.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Labour Shane Gibson told reporters in February that the AG\u2019s office will be relocated to a government building on John F.
