Good for him. But, Bahamians need him to have a voice on matters of national importance right here at home.

It is not clear who is in charge of the present government. While Ministers seem to be ducking for cover, the Prime Minister is missing in action. He seems incapable of taking the heat of governing in tough times. His angry and belligerent language suggests a leader out of control and incapable of handling pressure. Moreover, the Prime Minister seems to be fully out of ideas and out of solutions. His government cannot deliver anything it promised to the people. Only the special interests are doing well. For them it is promises made and promises kept. For most others the Country is fully adrift. Mr. Christie needs to stand up and inspire confidence that someone is in charge—even if it is not him.

Today’s news reports do not inspire confidence.

At a time when thousands of eligible Bahamians are desperate for houses and when houses built by the FNM remain vacant and vandalized, it takes the Minister of Housing almost three months to hire someone to supervise the building process. No Priority there. No leadership there. Minister Dorsett is new, but his MIA Prime Minister has been at this a while.

At a time when every dollar counts but when crime has become an everyday occurrence in the Capital’s City Centre, a major cruise ship has resorted to telling their guests not to move around with cash in this cash-based economy. Despite the murders and the robberies in broad daylight in heavily-trafficked tourist areas, there seems to be no answers and no priorities on the part of the Government. The PLP’s pre-election “we have all the answers” mouthpiece, Minister Keith Bell is as quiet as a church mouse. He seems lost. His boss is equally silent and has had to resort to a “hail Mary tell me what to do” town hall. Meanwhile the homicide/murder/killing rate (whatever they choose to call it) jumps every day.

At a time when by the Prime Minister’s own admission the Country’s reputation has taken a beating because of the Detention Centre Abuse and Cover up, and when the ducking and dodging by his Ministers cannot end, we have new reports that no leader of the government is stepping up to address the charge of rape at the detention centre. We hope that The Tribune report that the matter “will not” be investigated is nothing more than a misunderstanding. Once again, the leaders of the government and the leader of the Country have nothing to say and are hiding behind a Public Relations officer. That is a very sad state of affairs. The Country cannot endure another embarrassing round of denials and leaders burying their heads in the sand.

The Prime Minister looked great on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC as he spoke to the King’s Speech and March anniversary. Good for him. But, Bahamians need him to have a voice on matters of national importance right here at home. He needs to take charge. If he can’t stand the heat, he needs to give up the job. The Country needs a full time Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister looked great on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC as he spoke at the anniversary of the King’s Speech and March.
