{"id":39266,"date":"2013-09-13T08:46:19","date_gmt":"2013-09-13T12:46:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=39266"},"modified":"2013-09-13T09:04:46","modified_gmt":"2013-09-13T13:04:46","slug":"bahamians-to-get-first-refusal-in-esso-sale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2013\/09\/bahamians-to-get-first-refusal-in-esso-sale","title":{"rendered":"Bahamians To Get First Refusal In ESSO Sale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-39297\" title=\"esso\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/esso.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/esso.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/esso-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>The government is stalling the sale of Esso (Bahamas) to a Caribbean company for the time being, aiming to ensure that Bahamians are given \u201cfirst right of refusal\u201d in any potential deal, Guardian Business can confirm.<\/p>\n<p>Esso (Bahamas) has been seeking government approval to sell its operations in The Bahamas to SOL \u2013 Simpson Oil Limited \u2013 which has operations in 19 Caribbean countries\/territories.<\/p>\n<p>The sale of the Bahamian Esso operations has already been negotiated as part of a larger deal in which SOL would acquire the downstream (retail) operations of Exxon Mobil in seven territories across the Caribbean, Guardian Business understands.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of State for Investments Khaalis Rolle confirmed yesterday that the deal has not received approval, and the government is considering exactly what approach it will take to the matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that Bahamians should be given the opportunity to participate in the process. The biggest complaint we\u2019re getting is that Bahamians are not getting opportunity to participate in process, so we will evaluate it based on that premise.<\/p>\n<p>One of the companies who might be in a position to consider a restructured Esso deal would be FOCOL, the BISX-listed petroleum producer\u2019s supplier which acquired Shell\u2019s operations in The Bahamas in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, Franklyn Wilson, FOCOL\u2019s largest shareholder, said he was not aware of the position the government had taken with respect to the Esso\/SOL deal.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if FOCOL would consider bidding on the opportunity were it restructured, Wilson said: \u201cOur board of directors didn\u2019t consider it (previously) because we didn\u2019t consider it an option.
