Crime in Nassau: CRITICAL<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

A local newspaper has launched the McCabe Project: “an in-depth exploration of the social and psychological\u00a0 roots of criminality in Bahamian society.”<\/p>\n

Called the McCabe Project, the Tribune newspaper has initiated a series of articles, the first one written by Paco Nunez and Rupert Missick Jr., two bright lights of Bahamian jounrlaism.<\/p>\n

Bahamian politicians would like to have us believe that crime originates at the fringes of society and that tough police work can address the problem.<\/p>\n

That concept has failed miserably since Independence.<\/p>\n

To truly address the crime problem, one must look beyond the surface and treat the root causes of crime, not just the symptoms or results of crime.<\/p>\n

The Tribune’s project takes its name from an old poem, written by a British Sea Captain named McCabe, who in 1814 was robbed by thieves in The Bahamas.\u00a0 McCabe hired a small boat in hopes of reaching a nearby island, but was caught in a storm and later died in Nassau of yellow fever.<\/p>\n

He allegedly wrote the following poem before he died:<\/p>\n

McCabe’s Curse<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Land of cursed rocks and stones,<\/em><\/span>
\n Land where many leave their bones,<\/em><\/span>
\n Land of rascals, rogues and peddlers,<\/em><\/span>
\n Busy, scandalising meddlers;<\/em><\/span>
\n Land of poverty and want,<\/em><\/span>
\n Where pride is plenty, money scant,<\/em><\/span>
\n Take this, my very heartiest curse,<\/em><\/span>
\n And, if I could, I’d give you worse;<\/em><\/span>
\n For all your natvies, I know well,<\/em><\/span>
\n Love me as I love hell;<\/em><\/span>
\n And to them, I’m just as civil,<\/em><\/span>
\n And wish them all sent to the devil.<\/em><\/span>
\n May whirlwinds, earthquakes, tempest, rain,<\/em><\/span>
\n Fever, ague, want and pain,<\/em><\/span>
\n Poverty and famine fell<\/em><\/span>
\n Drive them all to hottest hell,<\/em><\/span>
\n And when they’re dead, the worthless dogs,<\/em><\/span>
\n May they be rooted up by hogs,<\/em><\/span>
\n Or lying in their lodgings narrow,<\/em><\/span>
\n May land-crabs feast upon their marrows.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
