{"id":39606,"date":"2013-09-23T09:01:51","date_gmt":"2013-09-23T13:01:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=39606"},"modified":"2013-09-23T09:01:52","modified_gmt":"2013-09-23T13:01:52","slug":"officers-cleared-in-custody-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2013\/09\/officers-cleared-in-custody-death","title":{"rendered":"Officers Cleared In Custody Death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2013\/09\/officers-cleared-in-custody-death-39606.html\/brutality-2\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-39607\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-39607\" title=\"brutality\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/brutality.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/brutality.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/brutality-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>The Coroner\u2019s Court jury charged with looking into the police custody death of 35-year-old Jamie Smith found that his killing was lawful.<\/p>\n<p>The jury also found that the force used to subdue Smith on February 8 was justifiable.<\/p>\n<p>Smith died within 12 hours of his arrest at the Central Detective Unit (CDU) after he allegedly confessed to two armed robberies.<\/p>\n<p>Inspector Ezra Maycock, Sergeant Keno Smith, Corporal Brian Roache and Corporal Sterling Knowles were at CDU when Smith died.<\/p>\n<p>The officers said they struggled to contain Smith after he violently attacked them in a bid to escape from Maycock\u2019s office at the CDU.<\/p>\n<p>Roache, who has martial arts training, said he applied a carotid sleeper hold that was not taught at the Police Training College.<\/p>\n<p>Smith began gasping for breath during the struggle and collapsed and died shortly after it ended, the jury heard. Smith died from asphyxia (lack of oxygen) caused by neck compression.<\/p>\n<p>Coroner Jeanine Weech-Gomez summed up the case.
