{"id":43728,"date":"2013-11-26T13:20:18","date_gmt":"2013-11-26T18:20:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=43728"},"modified":"2013-11-26T13:23:17","modified_gmt":"2013-11-26T18:23:17","slug":"shared-responsibility-strengthening-results-for-an-aids-free-generation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2013\/11\/shared-responsibility-strengthening-results-for-an-aids-free-generation","title":{"rendered":"Shared Responsibility &#8211; Strengthening Results For An AIDS-Free Generation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-43729\" title=\"world-aids-day\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/world-aids-day.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/world-aids-day.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/world-aids-day-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/world-aids-day-250x187.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>World AIDS Day, December 1, 2013<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number of new HIV infections has declined by 42% in the Caribbean,\u201d says Mr. John Dinkelman, U.S. Charg\u00e9 d&#8217;Affaires, \u201cand the U.S. Government investment in the PEPFAR program has helped to support that decline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. President\u2019s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is the largest effort by any nation to combat a single disease. \u00a0PEPFAR, which began in 2003 as an emergency response to AIDS in low-resource settings, is now focused on advancing the sustainability of the response.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, the PEPFAR Program was re-authorized by U.S. Congress through September 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The global community has made groundbreaking progress in saving lives through HIV prevention, treatment, and care services.\u00a0 PEPFAR is proud to support partner countries as they assume growing leadership of their fight against HIV\/AIDS in the Caribbean Region.<\/p>\n<p>Working together, we must build on our successes to save even more lives and meet our shared responsibility in order to achieve the goal of an AIDS-free generation. \u00a0The PEPFAR Caribbean Region Partnership Framework is a five-year strategy implemented in Barbados and the OECS, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, and the Bahamas.<\/p>\n<p>The annual budget for the PEPFAR Caribbean Region program is $23 million (US).\u00a0 The program focuses on prevention interventions for key populations and supporting sustainable national programs, through support to Ministries of Health and National AIDS Programs and Civil Society Organizations.\u00a0 PEPFAR also supports bi-lateral programs in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Guyana.<\/p>\n<p>Annually, PEPFAR reports on results achieved by its programs across the range of prevention, treatment and care programs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PEPFAR directly supported life-saving antiretroviral treatment for more than\u00a03.9 million men, women and children worldwide as of September 30, 2011.<\/li>\n<li>PEPFAR directly supported HIV testing and counseling for\u00a0more than 9.8 million pregnant women\u00a0in fiscal year 2011. PEPFAR supported\u00a0antiretroviral drug prophylaxis to prevent mother-to-child transmission for more than 660,000 of these women who tested positive for HIV, allowing approximately\u00a0200,000 infants\u00a0to be born HIV-free.<\/li>\n<li>PEPFAR directly supported nearly\u00a013 million people with care and support, including\u00a0more than 4.1 million orphans and vulnerable children, in fiscal year 2011.<\/li>\n<li>PEPFAR directly supported HIV counseling and testing for\u00a0more than 40 million people\u00a0in fiscal year 2011, providing a critical entry point to prevention, treatment, and care.<\/li>\n<li>The U.S. is the first and largest donor to the\u00a0Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. To date, the U.S. has provided more than $5.8 billion to the Fund.
