{"id":45564,"date":"2013-12-26T22:27:31","date_gmt":"2013-12-27T03:27:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/target\/a-different-bahamas"},"modified":"2013-12-26T22:29:36","modified_gmt":"2013-12-27T03:29:36","slug":"a-different-bahamas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2013\/12\/a-different-bahamas","title":{"rendered":"A Different Bahamas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/target\/a-different-bahamas\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/christmaspovertynr.jpg\" alt=\"A different Bahamas\" width=\"576\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We stand in the cramped efficiency with a 36-year-old mother of five trying to understand how it is anyone could survive in here.<\/p>\n<p>There is a small single bed stuffed into an even smaller enclosed area of the home.\u00a0 It is next to a toilet and a tiny shower area two short steps from the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>The mother tells us that the children sleep in the bed.<\/p>\n<p>I am confused.\u00a0 Where is it that she sleeps?<\/p>\n<p>She points to some sheets balled up at the foot of the bed.<\/p>\n<p>At nighttime, she says, she spreads them on the floor in front of the bed \u2014 in front of the toilet next to the tiny shower area \u2014 and she sleeps.<\/p>\n<p>The place does not seem secure.<\/p>\n<p>The other night, she says, two men were at the window trying to get in.\u00a0 She says she was terrified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m scared in here at nights,\u201d the woman says.<\/p>\n<p>But this is the best she can do at this time, she tells us.<\/p>\n<p>The woman says she has no job.<\/p>\n<p>There is no Christmas tree, and she doubts the children will have anything for Christmas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenassauguardian.com\/index1.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=44092\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to read the complete article at www.thenassauguardian.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We do not all live in the same Bahamas.
