{"id":46951,"date":"2014-01-20T10:20:25","date_gmt":"2014-01-20T15:20:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/target\/crime-costs-bahamas-multi-millionaires-investment-project"},"modified":"2014-01-20T10:21:04","modified_gmt":"2014-01-20T15:21:04","slug":"crime-and-third-world-mentality-destroying-the-bahamas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2014\/01\/crime-and-third-world-mentality-destroying-the-bahamas","title":{"rendered":"Crime and &#8216;Third-World&#8217; Mentality Destroying The Bahamas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-31592\" title=\"branville-mccartney\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/branville-mccartney.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/branville-mccartney.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/branville-mccartney-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>The Democratic National Alliance\u2019s (DNA) leader yesterday said crime fears had cost the Bahamas a job-creating investment by a \u201cmulti-millionaire client\u201d, as he likened doing business in this nation to \u201chell\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Branville McCartney told Tribune Business that the Bahamas \u201ccontinues to put tremendous hurdles\u201d in the way of investors coming to its shores, with local entrepreneurs enjoying an equally hard time.<\/p>\n<p>A former immigration minister, he described one such hurdle as the \u201cbureaucracy and red tape\u201d of the work permit and permanent residency processes, urging that these be \u201cstreamlined\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>And, turning his attention to this week\u2019s highly publicise detention of a top UBS (Bahamas) executive by the Immigration Department, Mr McCartney said the whole episode sent a message that the Bahamas was still living \u201cin the Third World\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the heavy-handed treatment allegedly meted out to Emmanuel Fiaux had embarrassed not just the Government but the entire Bahamas.<\/p>\n<p>And Mr McCartney called for Immigration to issue an \u201cacross the board\u201d apology, going beyond the Swiss banker, encompassing the numerous persons apprehended while waiting &#8211; in some cases for \u201cmonths and months\u201d &#8211; for their work permit renewal applications to be processed.<\/p>\n<p>Calling for the Bahamas to become \u201cmore progressive\u201d, the DNA leader said the \u201cThird World mindset\u201d of its leaders meant it was stuck in a rut and failing to tackle key issues.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>\u201cThis is so Third World and continues to happen.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Suggesting that continuing high crime levels, and the fear of crime, was starting to deter foreign direct investment vital to the Bahamian economy, Mr McCartney told Tribune Business: \u201cI had a client call me yesterday, a multi-millionaire client.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had a group of persons wishing to come over to the Bahamas to invest. He said to me: \u2018McCartney, we are pulling out of the proposed investment, and you know why?
