{"id":48758,"date":"2014-02-13T09:18:02","date_gmt":"2014-02-13T14:18:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=48758"},"modified":"2014-02-13T09:18:48","modified_gmt":"2014-02-13T14:18:48","slug":"btvi-encourages-healthy-living","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2014\/02\/btvi-encourages-healthy-living","title":{"rendered":"BTVI Encourages Healthy Living"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-48761\" alt=\"btvi-healthylife\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/btvi-healthylife.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Beauty, health and fitness were all rolled into one as over 20 exhibitors recently participated in The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute\u2019s (BTVI) Wellness Fair.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-48762\" alt=\"btvi-students\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/btvi-students.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"267\" \/>The Soldier Road campus was abuzz with excitement as students, staff, faculty and the general public flocked to eager participants who were armed with information, samples and ready to demonstrate their skills.\u00a0 Adding to the day\u2019s activities was a live broadcast including ZNS\u2019 radio personality Prime Time Deon.<\/p>\n<p>It was an effort led by the Student Affairs Department to encourage the BTVI family and the public to make healthy choices.<\/p>\n<p>On hand to welcome exhibitors and attendees was BTVI\u2019s Manager and Consultant, Dr. Iva Dahl.\u00a0 \u201cThis fair addresses the whole person,\u201d she said, \u201cTake the time to invest in a healthy lifestyle because when you do so, you spend less time at the doctor,\u201d she admonished the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Coordinator of Student Affairs, Racquel Bethel concurred with Dr. Dahl, adding that at BTVI, they believe in taking care of the needs of the entire man.\u00a0 \u201cWe provide technical education, but we also want to equip them with the necessary tools to embrace daily wellness,\u201d said Ms. Bethel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-48759 alignright\" alt=\"btvi-healthy-choices\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/btvi-healthy-choices.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>Meanwhile, the fair which was well attended, offered free blood pressure screening, wellness and community resource information, entertainment, demonstrations, giveaways and healthy snacks.<\/p>\n<p>Gio Cooper, owner and chef of Da\u2019 Bahamian Vegan, considered his company\u2019s participation not only as a good opportunity to promote vegan food but the healthy lifestyle concept on the whole.\u00a0 \u201cWe want people to eat healthy; it doesn\u2019t have to be a vegan lifestyle.\u00a0 We want people to rethink their eating habits,\u201d said the 28-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>Another exhibitor was Dr. Alvira Higgs, naturopathic specialist and founder of Healthy Lifestyle Center.\u00a0 She said education is key to healthy living and applauded BTVI for its efforts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-48760 alignleft\" alt=\"btvi-healthy-drink\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/btvi-healthy-drink.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>\u201cYoung people need this.\u00a0 They need to know from their youth and then they would go into adulthood making healthier decisions.\u00a0 I became a vegetarian 42 years ago.\u00a0 That was the last time I had animal products.\u00a0 I make everything from scratch, including oat burgers,\u201d said Dr. Higgs.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Keithera Ferguson, who completed BTVI in December 2013 noted that the information she obtained during the wellness fair was invaluable.\u00a0 \u201cI had some fever grass tea. It helps to flush out toxins.\u00a0 Also, the nutritional information was really educational and I\u2019m now even considering getting a cleanse,\u201d mused the 22-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>Ivan Thompson, a member of the public, expressed his enthusiasm about attending the fair. He said it fell in line with one of his goals for 2014.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just did my first colonoscopy therapy.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to be a statistic. I\u2019m also drinking a gallon of water per day.
