{"id":51245,"date":"2014-03-04T18:19:30","date_gmt":"2014-03-04T23:19:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=51245"},"modified":"2014-03-10T08:58:46","modified_gmt":"2014-03-10T12:58:46","slug":"us-bahamas-partner-for-caribbean-security-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2014\/03\/us-bahamas-partner-for-caribbean-security-initiative","title":{"rendered":"US-Bahamas Partner For Caribbean Security Initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-51246\" alt=\"Arreaga-6a\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Arreaga-6a.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"325\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Deputy Assistant Secretary of State (DAS) for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) traveled to The Bahamas February 25-27 to engage senior government officials on the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI), a regional partnership to improve citizen safety throughout the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-51247\" alt=\"Arreaga-1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Arreaga-1.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"177\" \/>On Wednesday, February 26, DAS Arreaga and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration Fred Mitchell signed an Amended Letter of Agreement (ALOA) which provides an additional $1,850,000 in U.S. assistance under CBSI to reduce illicit trafficking, increase public safety and security, and promote social justice\u2014the ALOA also increases U.S. support for corrections in The Bahamas.\u00a0 During his visit, DAS Arreaga met with Minister of National Security Dr. Bernard Nottage and Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General Allyson Maynard-Gibson to discuss ongoing programs to combat illicit drugs and organized crime and to support law enforcement and rule of law.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51249 alignleft\" alt=\"Arreaga-3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Arreaga-3.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"218\" \/>At the American Corner on Tuesday, February 25, DAS Arreaga attended a presentation by the National L.E.A.D. Institute and participants of a corrections-focused study tour to North Carolina in January 2014 sponsored by the Embassy\u2019s INL Section.\u00a0 The study tour gave sixteen Bahamian government and civil society representatives an opportunity to explore best practices and alternative approaches in rehabilitative services.\u00a0 At the presentation, trip participants shared their lessons learned from the trip, including their ideas for creating more collaborative, coordinated, evidence-based approach to corrections in The Bahamas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-51252\" alt=\"Arreaga-4a\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Arreaga-4a.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" \/>Continuing the longstanding partnership in law enforcement between the United States and The Bahamas, DAS Arreaga and Acting Royal Bahamas Police Force Commissioner Quinn McCartney participated in the formal handover of more than $110,000 in technology and equipment for the Drug Enforcement Unit on February 26.\u00a0 DAS Arreaga also formally presented a 15-foot galvanized boat trailer to the Marine Support Unit valued at over $1,000.\u00a0 The equipment will enhance the Royal Bahamas Police Force\u2019s ability to gather law enforcement information, conduct investigations, and perform interdiction operations.\u00a0 DAS Arreaga and Acting Commissioner McCartney also discussed several ongoing projects supported by the Embassy\u2019s INL Section, including plans to refurbish an auditorium and model classroom at the Police College and to upgrade previously-donated equipment in the Police College computer lab.<\/p>\n<p>While in Nassau, DAS Arreaga also received a tour of Her Majesty\u2019s Prison from Acting Superintendent Patrick Wright.\u00a0 In October 2013, INL sponsored Her Majesty\u2019s Prison participation in a four-day study tour to examine construction and bidding for security infrastructure in Lincoln, Nebraska, which explored best practices in prison\/detention facility design, construction, and operation.\u00a0 INL organized the schedule for a Bahamian-funded follow-up visit by Acting Superintendent Wright and several officials from Her Majesty\u2019s Prison to the Nebraska State Penitentiary February 23-25 to take a more focused look at the prison industries operation and medical support services.\u00a0 DAS Arreaga and Acting Superintendent Wright discussed ways to deepen cooperation in the area of corrections.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><em>United States Embassy, Nassau<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-51253\" alt=\"Arreaga-7\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Arreaga-7.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"325\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #888888;\">Captions: (top to bottom)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #888888;\">Top: DAS Arreaga visits the RBPF\u2019s Marine Support Unit to formally present Acting Royal Bahamas Police Force Commissioner Quinn McCartney with maritime equipment to enhance the RBPF\u2019s ability to gather law enforcement information, conduct investigations, and perform interdiction operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\">Second and third photo: DAS Arreaga and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration Fred Mitchell sign Amended Letter of Agreement (ALOA) which provides an additional $1,850,000 in U.S. assistance under CBSI.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #888888;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #888888;\">DAS Arreaga meets with the Minister of National Security Dr. Bernard Nottage to discuss ongoing programs to combat illicit drugs and organized crime.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #888888;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #888888;\">DAS Arreaga attends presentation by the National L.E.A.D.
