{"id":54236,"date":"2014-03-18T08:45:00","date_gmt":"2014-03-18T12:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=54236"},"modified":"2014-03-26T09:02:48","modified_gmt":"2014-03-26T13:02:48","slug":"business-consultant-urges-financial-culture-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2014\/03\/business-consultant-urges-financial-culture-change","title":{"rendered":"Business Consultant Urges Financial Culture Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54245\" alt=\"btvi\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/btvi.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"325\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Freelance Business Consultant, Bridgette Mackey, recently stated that there needs to be a change in the financial culture throughout The Bahamas and the offloading of some personal expenses as the government readies to implement Value Added Tax (VAT).<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) on the topic, \u201cVAT and the Bahamian Consumer,\u201d Ms. Mackey who assists businesses with VAT preparation said, as the government is taking measures to increase its revenue base and decrease expenditure, consumers ought to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a culture, we borrow. That mindset has to change.\u00a0 The banks make a killing on our debt. The Bible says, \u2018The borrower is slave to the lender.\u2019 Let\u2019s start saving,\u201d she stressed at the forum organized by BTVI\u2019s Business and Student Affairs departments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we all take a look, we probably will find some area of waste,\u201d said Ms. Mackey, adding that every working person should have a budget and stick to it.<\/p>\n<p>She stated that when people are not taking note of what they are spending each penny on, the money is subject to waste.<\/p>\n<p>The business analyst\u2019s advice for saving included: track all daily spending as it gives a picture of where one\u2019s money is going; save towards vacations, back-to-school, Christmas shopping etc.; team up with others to purchase goods in bulk and cut out items which add no value to one\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Ms. Mackey noted that there may be businesses that decide to capitalize on VAT and exercise unscrupulous actions.\u00a0 She advised attendees to be vigilant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe on the look-out for businesses which hike prices to take advantage of customers.\u00a0 Make note of what you\u2019re paying for items now, compared to when VAT comes on stream,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Ms. Mackey noted that receipts should clearly indicate the VAT amount being charged; meanwhile, consumers should be aware of items that are VAT exempted and ensure they are not being taxed on those.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Ms. Mackey encouraged BTVI\u2019s students, staff and faculty to<br \/>\nexamine their household circumstances and make adjustments in preparation for VAT.
