{"id":56445,"date":"2014-03-26T08:51:09","date_gmt":"2014-03-26T12:51:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=56445"},"modified":"2014-03-31T08:38:04","modified_gmt":"2014-03-31T12:38:04","slug":"woodcock-students-tour-us-coast-guard-cutter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2014\/03\/woodcock-students-tour-us-coast-guard-cutter","title":{"rendered":"Woodcock Primary Students Tour U.S. Coast Guard Cutter GANNET"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56447\" alt=\"uscg-6\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/uscg-6.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"325\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A fifth grade class at Woodcock Primary School got quite a treat on Thursday, March 20 when they were invited to participate in a tour onboard the visiting U.S. Coast Guard Guard Cutter GANNET while docked at the Prince George Wharf.\u00a0 The excited students were accompanied by class teachers Mrs. Claudia Sawyer and Ms. Willisa Robinson.\u00a0 U.S. Embassy officials also on hand for the tour included Public Affairs Officer Neda Brown and U.S. Coast Guard representative, Lt. Matthew Lamb.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-56448\" alt=\"uscg-2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/uscg-2.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>The excited students, many of whom admitted that the experience was their first time onboard a ship, got a once in a lifetime opportunity to interact with the ship\u2019s captain, Sr. Chief Orlando and his thirteen member crew.<\/p>\n<p>During the 90 minute tour, the students were split into groups and learned about the role of the U.S. Coast Guard including search and rescue and migrant interdiction.\u00a0 The Coast Guard officers also highlighted the longstanding partnership with their Bahamian law enforcement counterparts at the Royal Bahamas Defence Force. The students\u2019 interactive tour included lessons about boating and water safety and the proper use and importance of wearing life jackets and floatation devices.<\/p>\n<p>The students were also given a tour of the ship\u2019s bridge and galley and got a chance to participate in a simulation exercise on how the Coast Guard responds to fires on board distressed vessels while at sea.<\/p>\n<p>The Coast Guard Cutter GANNET departed Nassau on March 22.\u00a0 The ship\u2019s homeport is Dania Beach, Florida.<\/p>\n<p>United States Embassy, Nassau<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1'
