Free National Movement (FNM)\u2008Leader Dr. Hubert Minnis says crime is \u201csmothering\u201d the nation despite Prime Minister Perry Christie\u2019s repeated statements that his government will arrest the problem.<\/p>\nFree National Movement (FNM)\u2008Leader Dr. Hubert Minnis says crime is \u201csmothering\u201d the nation despite Prime Minister Perry Christie\u2019s repeated statements that his government will arrest the problem.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe said he was going to smother crime,\u201d\u2008Minnis said. \u201cIt looks like crime is coming to smother us.\u201d<\/p>\n
He called on the government to re-establish the dedicated gun court which was established by the Ingraham administration.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat no longer exists and gun cases are mixed with other cases which means that there can be delays,\u201d Minnis said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd the criminals know this, that their cases will not [be heard] in an expeditious manner.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also urged the government to ensure greater restrictions are placed on people on bail for serious crimes.<\/p>\n
Minnis suggested they be placed under house arrest.<\/p>\n
He said something has to be done so that defendants are not committing new crimes while awaiting trial.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is an area that has to be dealt with and would resolve a lot of the issues that we face,\u201d he said. \u201cThat must be dealt with as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
Minnis said the government must enforce existing laws, create jobs and support social programs to lower crime.<\/p>\n
