It is written as a prequel to\u00a0Robert\u00a0Louis Stevenson&#8217;s famous novel,<em>Treasure Island,\u00a0<\/em>and features both fictional and real-life pirates.\u00a0The series is filmed in\u00a0South Africa and includes some nudity as well as cheesy computer-generated pirate ships.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Filmed in Puerto Rico,\u00a0<em>Crossbones<\/em>\u00a0is \u00a0described as &#8220;a fact-based drama that focuses on one of the world\u2019s most\u00a0notorious real-life pirates\u201d. This is none other than Edward Teach, better known as\u00a0Blackbeard, who is played by John Malkovich.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This series airs on NBC next month and was inspired by the 2007 book,\u00a0<em>Republic of Pirates<\/em>, by American\u00a0journalist Colin Woodard. According to the producers, &#8220;This is a story about a man who wants to create a new world,\u00a0which required us as filmmakers to at least approximate the new\u00a0world. We basically built a town in Puerto Rico.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Both\u00a0<em>Crossbones<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Black Sails<\/em>\u00a0are set in and around the\u00a0island of New Providence &#8211; which was pirate\u00a0HQ in the early 1700s. So it is disappointing that neither\u00a0were filmed in the Bahamas.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>Many will recall that two of Johnnie Depp\u2019s\u00a0<em>Pirates of the Caribbean<\/em>\u00a0movies &#8211; which have earned hundreds of millions worldwide &#8211; were filmed here in the mid-2000s &#8211; on Grand Bahama to be exact,\u00a0at Gold Rock Studios, which took over the former US\u00a0missile tracking\u00a0base near High Rock.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Back then, Prime Minister Perry Christie\u00a0predicted the birth of a new film production industry here in glowing\u00a0terms. But today, all that remains is some rusting junk along the Grand Bahama shoreline.
