{"id":59874,"date":"2014-04-10T08:49:14","date_gmt":"2014-04-10T12:49:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=59874"},"modified":"2014-04-15T09:15:14","modified_gmt":"2014-04-15T13:15:14","slug":"books-are-back-on-bay-street","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2014\/04\/books-are-back-on-bay-street","title":{"rendered":"Books are Back on Bay Street"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>68 Years Later, The Linen Shop Celebrates Re-launch with Book Nook &amp; More<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-60202\" alt=\"gloria-raine-heather-white-linen-shop\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/gloria-raine-heather-white-linen-shop.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"325\" \/>Nearly seven decades after it opened its doors selling pure Irish linens, The Linen Shop is celebrating its re-launch, bringing back to Bay Street the first book store in the downtown area in more than five years.<\/p>\n<p>Inspiration for The Book Nook inside the shop that has become a staple in historic Nassau with its heavy wooden trim painted a deep forest green came from one of the owners finding a copy of a book of poetry and prose by the shop\u2019s original owner, her late grandmother, Wilhelmina Johnstone.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-59878\" alt=\"gloria-raine-heather-white-linen-shop2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/gloria-raine-heather-white-linen-shop2.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"230\" \/>Bahamian Jottings had been out of print for some time, said Heather White, who with her sister-in-law Gloria Raine, has held on to the traditions of high quality goods in a street increasingly given over to t-shirts and souvenirs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I started going through an old copy of the matriarch of the family\u2019s writings, it was so moving,\u201d said Mrs. White. \u201cHer way of telling what it was like to live in The Bahamas when the hardships were as plentiful as the sun just gave us chills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>White and Raine said it was like a light bulb.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had lamented the loss of a book store on Bay Street ever since the Island Shop closed,\u201d said Mrs. Raine. \u201cWhen we started going through this treasure, the book of poetry by the woman who opened the shop in the middle of the last century, it hit us, \u2018Why not us? Why shouldn\u2019t we be the new purveyor of books about The Bahamas on Bay Street?\u2019 Once we set our minds to it, there was no stopping us and the project became so much fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The women agreed instantly on one thing \u2013 The Book Nook, as they dubbed it, would handle books about The Bahamas, whether by Bahamians or others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were more titles out there than we ever dreamed,\u201d said Mrs. Raine. Among the best-sellers: Bahama Mama&#8217;s Cooking, Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean, Bahamas Sketchbook, A Serpent in Eden and The Story of The Bahamas.\u201d More than 30 titles now take their place astride linen bun covers, bamboo sheets, fine scarves, dozens of styles of place mats and tablecloths, gifts for occasions from birthdays to anniversaries and a permanent display of Bahamian holiday ornaments.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, April 13, The Linen Shop will officially celebrate its re-launch with a function at the shop in the afternoon. And, yes, Wilhelmina Johnstone\u2019s Bahamian Jottings will be there for the event. The book that inspired the re-birth of one of Nassau\u2019s oldest retail traditions has been re-printed.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><em>Diane Phillips and Associates<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><em>BAHAMIAN BOOKS ARE BACK ON BAY \u2013 Books about Bahamian history, lore and more are back in historic Nassau, thanks to the opening of The Book Nook inside The Linen Shop. Creation of the reading corner was inspired by shop owners Gloria Raine, left, and Heather White, who started going through a copy of Bahamian Jottings, written by their late grandmother who opened the store, then called Johnstone\u2019s, 68 years ago.
