A tearful Vontianise Deal recently accepted much-needed financial aid from Lowe\u2019s Wholesale Drug Agencies Ltd to assist with her study of cosmetology at The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI).<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel blessed. I am very excited and grateful to have this opportunity. It\u2019s amazing help. I felt as though I was held back because of finances. Being a Family Island student, it\u2019s kind of rough getting all of the things I need,\u201d said the native of Hatchet Bay, Eleuthera.<\/p>\n
The cheque presentation of $750 was made by Lowe\u2019s Brands Manager, Gloria Brown, who is also a member of BTVI\u2019s Beauty Trades\u2019 Program Advisory Committee.\u00a0 On hand to receive it, along with Vontianise was BTVI\u2019s Fund Development Assistant, Ushieka King.<\/p>\n
The 20-year-old lauded Lowe\u2019s efforts, encouraging other businesses to become corporate sponsors.\u00a0 \u201cSome people have a lot of potential but can\u2019t show their full capabilities because they\u2019re stuck. They don\u2019t have the resources and that\u2019s the position I found myself in.\u00a0 I tried really hard to get my cosmetology supplies for school, but sometimes I was late,\u201d said the first-year BTVI student.<\/p>\n
Ms. Brown stated how important it is for her company to play a role in helping young people like Vontianise.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to assist our young, upcoming entrepreneurs as much as possible, particularly those who need financial help.\u00a0 We want to be a part of them realizing their dreams,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Additionally, one of BTVI\u2019s requirements for choosing the recipient was that the student made a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.75 for the fall semester; however Vontianise landed a 3.59 – far surpassing the minimum requirement.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am passionate about what I do.\u00a0 I was initially a business major at another institution, but wasn\u2019t passionate about it so I applied to BTVI because I always wanted to do hair and nails. I love it. I\u2019m enjoying myself and learning a lot,\u201d said the 2011 graduate of Central Eleuthera High.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Head of BTVI\u2019s Beauty Trades department, Dr. Donnalee Minnis commended Lowe\u2019s for its generous contribution.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can see their willingness to invest and when you invest in young people, particularly a female, you are not only helping her to help herself, but eventually her family; hence, the student becomes employable and it eases the burden on the wider community.\u00a0 It\u2019s a rippling effect,\u201d said Dr. Minnis.<\/p>\n
\u201cLowe\u2019s has partnered with BTVI for a few years and they\u2019re now giving another student the opportunity to harness their talent.\u00a0 They should be commended because it also shows the student that people still care,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
