{"id":6566,"date":"2011-02-23T09:54:49","date_gmt":"2011-02-23T14:54:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=6566"},"modified":"2011-02-23T09:54:49","modified_gmt":"2011-02-23T14:54:49","slug":"did-cop-lie-in-court-about-raping-teenage-girl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2011\/02\/did-cop-lie-in-court-about-raping-teenage-girl","title":{"rendered":"Did Cop Lie in Court About Raping Teenage Girl?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A police constable on Monday denied raping a teenage girl and begged a jury to acquit him.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Smith, 21, who is on trial for the alleged rape of a 19-year-old  woman on September 28, 2009, made an unsworn statement from the  prisoner\u2019s dock.<\/p>\n<p>In the Bahamas&#8217; corrupt and dysfunctional legal sytem, the accused has the option of making an unsworn statement to the jury, rather than having to testify under oath.<\/p>\n<p>This process is almost always abused and statements made under these circumstances are almost always lies.<\/p>\n<p>Smith was not subjected to cross-examination because he did not give  sworn evidence.  According to the young woman, she and her boyfriend  were at Goodman\u2019s Bay with another couple when Smith and his partner  arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Smith and his partner allegedly separated the women from their dates.
