{"id":68060,"date":"2014-06-11T09:18:50","date_gmt":"2014-06-11T13:18:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/target\/banks-warn-over-web-shop-regularization-plan"},"modified":"2014-07-01T09:10:06","modified_gmt":"2014-07-01T13:10:06","slug":"banks-concerned-over-web-shops-dirty-money","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2014\/06\/banks-concerned-over-web-shops-dirty-money","title":{"rendered":"Banks Concerned Over Web Shop&#8217;s Dirty Money"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/target\/banks-warn-over-web-shop-regularization-plan\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignnone\" alt=\"Banks warn over web shop \u2018regularization\u2019 plan\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Open-Number-Houses.jpg\" width=\"512\" height=\"342\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Local banking executives have thrown into question government\u2019s plans to \u201cregularize\u201d the web shops, suggesting that even once this occurs it may be difficult or impossible for banks to do business with them without the country facing a damaging potential \u2018blacklisting\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Without banks being able to handle web shop proceeds, this would have a knock-on negative impact on government\u2019s intention to reap millions in taxes from the web shop sector, some have warned.<\/p>\n<p>In an exclusive interview with Guardian Business, Ian Jennings, president of Commonwealth Bank, said with reference to the government\u2019s plans with respect to illegal web shops this year: \u201cIt\u2019s not as simply as just passing an act to regularize them; they also have to be seen within an international framework of FATF (the Financial Action Taskforce) and various other money laundering issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt goes back to a reputational issue for the jurisdictions, and I think a lot of people don\u2019t appreciate that and what may be the issues that fall out of that.
