{"id":6879,"date":"2011-03-04T10:25:27","date_gmt":"2011-03-04T15:25:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=6879"},"modified":"2011-03-04T10:25:27","modified_gmt":"2011-03-04T15:25:27","slug":"violent-criminals-paid-to-attend-btc-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2011\/03\/violent-criminals-paid-to-attend-btc-protest","title":{"rendered":"Violent Criminals Paid To Attend BTC Protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Minister of National Security Tommy Turnquest yesterday revealed that police believe that political operatives were responsible for bringing accused murderers and other violent offenders to last week&#8217;s protest against the sale of a majority stake in the Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) to Cable and Wireless Communications (CWC).<\/p>\n<p>Mr Turnquest made the revelation just before completing his mid-year budget contribution in the House of Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There were persons out there known to the police for armed robbery, drug arrest, causing harm, possession of ammunition and firearms, assault with a deadly weapon, murder, possession of firearms, murder, rape, armed robbery and shopbreaking, kidnapping, stealing and threats of death, house and shopbreaking, possession of dangerous drugs,&#8221; the Minister said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What is not acceptable is when political operatives bring unsavory criminal characters as part of the\u00a0 demonstration who are uncontrollable,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Turnquest did not reveal the identities of the people he refered to, nor did he accuse a particular politician or party of bringing violent offenders to the protest.<\/p>\n<p>He did say that people the police consider dangerous criminals were &#8220;clearly identifiable&#8221; in the crowd of unruly protestors.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Turnquest concluded by warning lawmakers to be cautious regarding the people they associate with.<\/p>\n<p>Obie Wilchcombe, opposition leader of business in the House, was quick to insist that the PLP was &#8220;not responsible for any unsavory characters,&#8221; at the protest.\u00a0 However, he stopped short of saying that freelance PLP operatives were not involved.<\/p>\n<p>The protest, allegedly organized by a group known as &#8220;Save BTC for Bahamians&#8221;, also included BTC union representatives and a large contingent of PLP supporters and politicians.<\/p>\n<p>PLP leader Perry Chrisite has said he knows nothing about the PLP paying people to show up in Rawson Square, although witnesses say they saw a bus full of PLP supporters being off-loaded near the Post Office.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, PLP MP for Fox Hill, Fred Mitchell all but admitted that the PLP bussed in protestors by saying, &#8220;So what if they were paid?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To mobilise people takes resources, food, busses, communication, emergency care &#8211; to name a few of the possible expenses,&#8221; Mitchell said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Minister of National Security Tommy Turnquest has revealed that police believe political operatives were responsible for bringing accused murderers and other violent offenders to last week&#8217;s unruly BTC protest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"rop_custom_images_group":[],"rop_custom_messages_group":[],"rop_publish_now":"initial","rop_publish_now_accounts":{"facebook_10223285771444175_51037792744":""},"rop_publish_now_history":[],"rop_publish_now_status":"pending","footnotes":""},"categories":[12],"tags":[36,93,31,43,68],"class_list":["post-6879","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-headlines","tag-btc","tag-corruption","tag-crime","tag-telecommunications","tag-unions"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6879","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6879"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6879\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6879"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6879"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6879"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
