{"id":71067,"date":"2014-07-03T15:36:59","date_gmt":"2014-07-03T19:36:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=71067"},"modified":"2014-07-21T12:23:28","modified_gmt":"2014-07-21T16:23:28","slug":"bahamas-national-culinary-team-shines-at-taste-of-the-caribbean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2014\/07\/bahamas-national-culinary-team-shines-at-taste-of-the-caribbean","title":{"rendered":"Bahamas National Culinary Team Shines at Taste of the Caribbean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-71068\" alt=\"bhta-bahamas-hotels-tourism-taste-caribbean\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/bhta-bahamas-hotels-tourism-taste-caribbean.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"325\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Months of preparation, culminated in the Bahamas National Culinary Team competing against top chefs throughout the region this week at the prestigious Taste of the Caribbean Competition 2014 in Miami and bringing home a number of top honors, including the team silver medal and two individual gold and six individual silver medals.<\/p>\n<p>The Bahamas Team was subject to fierce competition as last year\u2019s success brought them the distinction of being the team to beat in a variety of intense competitive categories including Chef of the Year, Pastry and Junior Chef of the Year, Bartender competitions, ice carving competitions, Mystery Basket, Cheesecake, Beef and Seafood competitions.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a rigorous schedule of events, logistical complications, and intense competition from top rival chefs, the Bahamas Team proved once again that the Bahamian Culinary Mastery reigns among the best in the region.\u00a0 This year\u2019s team was a mixture of several veterans, including co-captains Chefs Sheldon Tracy Sweeting and Michael Adderley, along with a younger group of up and coming chefs.<br \/>\nNational Culinary Team of the Bahamas Shines at Taste of the Caribbean<\/p>\n<p>Leading the individual honours was Chef Sheldon Tracy Sweeting who for the second consecutive year was selected as the Caribbean\u2019s Pastry Chef of the Year.\u00a0 Chef Sweeting has won that distinction in three of the past nine years and is a three-time entry into the Caribbean Chef\u2019s Hall of Fame, something which very few chefs have ever achieved.<\/p>\n<p>Chef Sweeting captured gold medals in both the pastry competition and the cheesecake competition.<\/p>\n<p>Competing in the regional competition for the first time was bartender Marv Cunningham from the Aura Nightclub at Atlantis who was awarded a silver medal in the bartender category.\u00a0 Indra Solihin from Atlantis was also competing for the first time and earned a silver medal in the ice carving category.<\/p>\n<p>Richmond Fowler from Albany was competing for the first time in the seafood category and was awarded a silver medal.\u00a0\u00a0 Silver medals were also awarded to Chef Charon McKenzie from the Lyford Cay Club in the beef category, and Jamal Small from the One and Only Ocean Club in the Chef of the Year category.<\/p>\n<p>Representing the Junior Chef category was Dwayne Sinclair, a student at the Lincoln Culinary Institute, who received a silver medal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe National Culinary Team have proven to be consummate Bahamian Culinary Ambassadors for our country\u201d according to Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association President Stuart Bowe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have illustrated what it means to be team players and competitors of the highest rank; skillful, professional, dedicated and most importantly equipped with the ethos, and ethics required to win with eloquence and elegance.\u00a0 They have made the Bahamas proud, not only as chefs, but as Bahamians\u201d adds Bowe.<\/p>\n<p>The Team\u2019s participation in this year\u2019s competition would not have been possible without the leadership and participation of the Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association, who drummed up sponsor support, leveraged partner relations, provided financial support and managed logistics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a team effort\u201d according to BHTA Executive Vice President Suzanne Pattusch who commended the BHTA staff members, including the Team Administrator, Charlotte Knowles Thompson who administrated every aspect of the teams participation from preparation to the final competition.
