It is no wonder crime is out-of-control in The Bahamas.<\/p>\n
A 38-year-old man was acquitted of the rape of a 17-year-old girl yesterday.<\/p>\n
After two hours of deliberations, a jury of seven women and two men unanimously found Modesta Colebrooke not guilty of the rape of the teenage girl.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors alleged that in September 2008, Colebrooke took the girl, whom he knew, to Blue Hill Heights and had sex with her against her will in his car.<\/p>\n
Colebrooke, who represented himself at his rape trial before Justice Vera Watkins, admitted to having sex with the girl but claimed that it had been consensual.<\/p>\n
Colebrooke thanked the jury after the not guilty verdict was announced.<\/p>\n
Despite his acquittal, he will remain on remand at Her Majesty’s Prison as he has another case pending in the Magistrates Court.<\/p>\n
Colebrooke shouted: “Thank God,” as he was escorted back to the Central Police Station after the verdict was handed down.<\/p>\n
