{"id":9318,"date":"2011-06-09T12:05:57","date_gmt":"2011-06-09T16:05:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=9318"},"modified":"2011-06-09T12:05:57","modified_gmt":"2011-06-09T16:05:57","slug":"pathetically-low-conviction-rates-encourage-crime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2011\/06\/pathetically-low-conviction-rates-encourage-crime","title":{"rendered":"Pathetically Low Conviction Rates Encourage Crime"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While the country continued to suffer from a high rate of crime in 2010, only a small number of criminals were convicted for serious offenses, newly released prison statistics show.<\/p>\n<p>Only 32 percent of the 2,374 people admitted to prison last year were sentenced inmates.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9319\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9319\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9319\" title=\"crime-graph\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/crime-graph-e1307635496218.jpg\" alt=\"Sentenced vs Remanded\" width=\"450\" height=\"333\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9319\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graph from the Nassau Guardian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And the vast majority of those inmates who were sentenced were convicted of petty crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 749 people who were sentenced in 2010, 72 percent of them were sentenced to serve a year or less in prison, according to Her Majesty\u2019s Prison (HMP) 2010 Report, which       was tabled in the House of Assembly yesterday by National Security Minister Tommy Turnquest.<\/p>\n<p>Just 12 percent or 93 inmates were sentenced to more than two years.<\/p>\n<p>Only 13 people (less than two percent of the people admitted to prison last year) were sentenced to 10 years or more in prison.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, only two people were sentenced for murder.
