{"id":9783,"date":"2011-06-29T08:06:26","date_gmt":"2011-06-29T12:06:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=9783"},"modified":"2011-06-29T08:06:26","modified_gmt":"2011-06-29T12:06:26","slug":"davis-calls-for-stronger-election-reform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2011\/06\/davis-calls-for-stronger-election-reform","title":{"rendered":"Davis Calls For Stronger Election Reform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Progressive Liberal\u2008Party (PLP)  Deputy Leader Philip Brave Davis suggested yesterday that the amendments  being proposed to the Parliamentary Elections Act do not go far enough  in reforming the election process.<\/p>\n<p>Davis offered several recommendations:<\/p>\n<p>He suggested that the government amend the law so that a voter\u2019s  finger is inked after casting a vote, as is the practice In Jamaica.\u00a0  Currently, a voter\u2019s thumb is dipped in indelible ink before the vote  is\u00a0 cast.<\/p>\n<p>The amendments state in certain terms that ballots that are marked with ink would be thrown out.<\/p>\n<p>Davis said such an amendment would eliminate the need for that. Over  the past decades, some voters have used the ink on their thumbs to  indicate their choice.<\/p>\n<p>As it relates to an amendment to allow for overseas voting, Davis pointed to the chance of abuse.<\/p>\n<p>He said the question is not whether people should be allowed to  register overseas.\u00a0 Davis said the opportunity is greater for them to  fraudulently register to vote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The mischief is with the activists who can go around and round up people to say &#8216;I live here&#8217;,&#8221; Davis said.<\/p>\n<p>He suggested that registration of voters is only carried out in The Bahamas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PLP Deputy Leader and drug lawyer, Philip Brave Davis, says proposed election reform amendments do not go far enough.
