I'm writing from Italy and shall be visiting Bahamas soon. I reserved in advance a hire car which has no liability insurance cover: where should I apply in order to take out a policy and how much this would cost for 2 weeks.
This is quite urgent. Thanks for a quick reply !

I am not aware of any company in The Bahamas that will issue a short term liability policy to a foreigner for a car rental, EXCEPT the rental car companies themselves.

If your own auto insurance policy does not cover rentals, and if the company you are renting the car from does not offer such a policy, then I would suggest finding another car rental company.

For a list of car rental companies, go to:

We are going to Long Island next week and were told there is no car insurance - that we have to pay cash and we rent at our own risk. Is this normal for the Out Islands?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you!

It depends, but that is often the case. It is a small "Family Island" and you just become one of the family. Don't look at it as a car "rental", think of it as someone "loaning" you a car, but for money.

Sorry, but I do know of a more "professional" car rental place in Long Island. K

Thanks so much for your speedy reply.

Thinking of it as a "loan" makes sense - it's just the lack of insurance I'm concerned about. And paying cash - by not using a credit card I have no protection whatsoever if something were to happen to the car or I were to hurt someone while driving.

What is the more "professional" place you know of?

Thanks again!
