Hey I'm a 20 year old male college student and I got my hands on a free ticket to Nassau so I'm coming down Feb 3-5 by myself. I don't really have enough money for a hotel room, but I've been reading about all the crime in the Bahamas and now I'm not sure if it's such a good idea to spend 2 nights without one. I go to school in Boston so I'm comfortable in cities, but I just don't know what to expect in Nassau at night. any comments/suggestions?

Nassau is a small town and hotels are the primary business. It is practically unthinkable to come here without hotel reservations. There are no camping sites and the police will arrest you on the spot if you don't have a place to stay.

If I were you, I would scrounge up a few hundred bucks and stay at an inexpensive hotel downtown, or on Cable Beach.

The fine for loitering will be at least that much anyway.

Or, hook-up with a couple of generous ladies who are staying at a hotel. ;)

what if I hang around at one of the casinos until they close? that's like 4 am and then I could bum around for a couple hours until people start getting up. would that work? Like I said a couple hundred dollars is a lot of money when you're paying for college, an apartment in boston and all your own food.

Unless you're playing the table or slots in the casino, I'm sure the security staff will see you as loitering and ask you to leave. Especially in the early hours. There's plenty of security that would be suspicious if you're just lolling around. As for walking around at 4am.. it would be quite dangerous to be out walking by yourself away from the hotel.

I realize that things are tight. Maybe a room at the Towne Hotel or Arawak Inn would be affordable.

Not to be mean, or not wanting you here, Unless you get a hotel room you may as well stay there.

If your from Boston theres just got to be a social program available which would allow you to vacation at the expense of the tax payer(the producers). I cannot imagine a country as great as the U.S. being so mean spirited as to suggest you pay your own way. Do some research, if its not available in Mass. .... its not available.
