Having just found out that a recently deceased relative had purchased property on Cat Island in 1956 and had done nothing with it since, I would like to take a trip there and see it. As I am an avid backpacker; I would like to hike and camp while there. Any ideas?

I was there in 1994 - Love the place but VERY remote in terms of everyday neccesities - at least it was back then. I would guess you could camp but I would be wary of the locals that have "squatted" on land for years and may act as though it is theirs and you are a tresspasser.

Camping is strongly discouraged in The Bahamas. It is not really safe and locals, most of whom are in the tourism industry, resent that they are not profiting from your stay.

There aren't any campgrounds -- you'd need to rough it in the heat, and bugs. I could see renting a place for the week and maybe venture out for a hike and beach sleep one night.

I am very interested in the property perhaps you can leave me your e=mail adress, so we can discuss it further.

AS fara as camping goes; Like the other bullitens the locals frown on it the beach and land belongs to the people if it is public and you would be considered undesirable. But if you are a good negotiater you might get a room cheap.
It is a special place and one should go!
