The recently completed BAIC survey for the new straw vendors website revealed that only 16 per cent in the handicraft industry believe in the benefits of being online.
Minister Neko Grant said that the new straw market will correct the ills of the current flea-market, namely sales of “knock off” goods, illegal sub-leasing of stalls; operation of multiple stalls by individual vendors; harassment of tourists; disorderly behaviour and existence of criminal activities.
Gone will be the stinky, foul-mouthed vendors who harrass tourists in between stuffing their mouths with fast food and leaving the trash on the floor of the Straw Market.
Straw vendors were recently informed that there will be stringent rules regarding intellectual property rights, following last year’s straw vendor arrests in New York for counterfeit goods.
Hundreds of straw vendors have lined themselves along Prince George Wharf defying police orders to move until they can occupy the new straw market building.
