British Toddler in Critical Condition After Being Hit by Boat in Bahamas

NASSAU, Bahamas – A 2-year-old boy from London was in critical condition after a motorboat ran aground on a beach and struck him on the head, authorities said Friday.

The accident occurred Thursday afternoon near the Atlantis Paradise Island resort, where the boy and his family were staying.

Police said the boat’s operator ran the vessel aground on full throttle, hitting Paul Gallagher in the head.

The boy was rushed to Doctors Hospital in Nassau, where he was listed in extremely critical condition, said Kay Chriswell, head nurse in the intensive care unit.

“It appears to be an accident,” Assistant Commissioner of Police Reginald Ferguson said. Police are investigating.

The Atlantis Paradise Island resort issued a statement saying its staff was praying for the boy and his family.

Boat operator James Bain, who was not employed by the resort, was treated for minor injuries. Authorities said he had come to the beach pulling his inflated “banana boat,” which he used to give rides to tourists.
