With all the signs of economic slowdown, Bahamians won’t be too happy to hear how much millions have been spent so far on replacing the Straw Market. And there’s no building started yet.
Two-million dollars was spent to renovate the old Customs shed to create a new site for the market and another $500,000 was given to contractors in an “open-ended” contract.
But when it was discovered that the U.S. government was concerned about security in the port area, Parliament discontinued the project, costing taxpayers at least an additional $500,000. More money was spent on the current site and yet more dollars on a parking lot.
And the new building when it’s finally done is expected to cost at least another $3.5 million.
How can any government persuade people that it is important to be prudent and save money in these hard times, when they sees how much money tbe government itself fluhes away?
If a project is not 100-per-cent feasible, don’t waste our money on it.
