To hear the rake and scrape, drums beating, and cowbells shaking you have no other choice but to tap your feet and dance to the melodious sounds of great Bahamian music! This year at the Independence Bahamian Music Concert you will experience the same thing, dancing to songs such as Roach on My Bread and Mama Don’t Like No Rakin’ and Scrapin’ in Here along with many other hits.
Obie Pindling, organiser of the event says that the audience should expect nothing less than a spectacular show.
He stated: “Some of the top names in Bahamian entertainment, past and present including without limitation, the Grammy Award winning Baha Men, Visage, Xtra Band, The Soulful Groovers, Sweet Sensation Band (from Exuma) and solo performers such as Ronnie Butler, Elon Moxey, Jay Mitchell, Ancient Man and the latest Bahamian sensation Avvy from Inagua. Also featured will be Rake n’ Scrape bands from Cat Island and Long Island.”
This year, this first Independence Concert will be held on Tuesday, July 4, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., and the second to be held Sunday night/Monday morning, July 9/10 from 12: 00 midnight to 4:30 a.m. at the Arawak Cay Heritage Site. According to Mr Pindling, last year, the concert was a tremendous success with approximately 10,000 to 15,000 people crowding the Arawak Cay Heritage Site to enjoy the star-studded line-up of Bahamian entertainers, and this year it is expected to be no different.
“With the strong influx of many other cultures such as Reggae and Soca, it is important to keep what is Bahamian truly Bahamian,” Mr Pindling said. “In my view, it is important for the Bahamian public to see this show because it highlights some of the biggest and most successful names in Bahamian entertainment, past and present.”
A concert of this magnitude will cost at least $50 per person if put on by a private promoter, he said. Instead, the Independence Committee and The Bahamas Government have continued with their recent annual tradition of providing a top-notch all-Bahamian concert free of charge to the general public. It will also be carried live on ZNS TV-13. But the real fun will be out there to experience the excitement firsthand in person at Arawak Cay.
