Bahamian Embassy Opens in Havana

Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque and his Bahamian counterpart Frederick Mitchell inaugurated the embassy of the English-speaking Caribbean nation on Monday in Havana. The Bahamian foreign minister characterized the day as very special and symbolic in bilateral relations, which was officially established on November 30, 1974.

Mitchell stressed that both governments have developed close relations over recent years in the areas of healthcare, trade, education and culture.

The Caribbean leader pointed out that Bahamian business executives see opportunities in increasing trade with Cuba not only in the area of services, but also in the exchange of merchandise.

With the national anthem and the hoisting of the Bahamian flag, this Caribbean nation of 323,000 inhabitants and 13,940 square kilometres land, the official diplomatic headquarters of the Bahamas was opened and in the Havana Miramar district. οΎ 

The Bahamas’ ambassador to Cuba, Calton Wright, was present as well as Cuban Ambassador to the Bahamas Felix Wilson and the diplomatic corps accredited in Havana. Perez Roque and Mitchell had previously held official talks in the Cuban Foreign Ministry headquarters during which time aspects of bilateral ties were examined as well as the regional and international situation.

Cuba and Bahamas belong to the Association of Caribbean States and the Non-Aligned Movement. Bahamas is formed by some 30 islands, 700 islets and over 2,000 uninhabited reefs, distributed in arcs from the coast of Florida north to the Wind Canal, which separates Cuba from the island of Hispaniola.
