Island-Wide Power Outage

The corporation was still struggling to correct the situation up to press time last night.

BEC general manager Kevin Basden told The Tribune that the corporation’s problems began at around 3:15pm, when a vehicle crashed into an electricity pole that services the Winton area. Mr Basden said he believes that the pole is located near the Soldier Road sub-station and that the crash caused 30 to 40 per cent of BEC customers to lose power. “We were in the process of returning supplies when there was an island-wide outage,” Mr Basden said.

At around 5:30pm yesterday, he said, BEC still had no idea what caused this second incident, but was able to restore power to 90 per cent of New Providence. Mr Basden said the corporatian hoped to restore full power with in half an hour. However, at around 6:00pm The Tribune again lost power and reports of a second widespread black-out continued to come in up to press time.
