No One In Custody After $6 Mil Drug Bust

Police said on Thursday they still had no one in custody in connection with the seizure of 700 pounds of cocaine on a container at the Freeport Container Port a day earlier.

The drugs, which were discovered on a 40-foot container around 11:15am, have an estimated street value of $6 million, police said.

Acting on information received, a team of officers from the Grand Bahama Drug Enforcement Unit, police K-9 Unit and US Drug Enforcement Administration, along with a team from Bahamas Customs and security from the Container Port, searched a targeted container suspected of carrying the illegal drugs onboard the MSC Yokohama.

According to police, inside the suspected container and hidden among a shipment of cardboard boxes were seven large duffle bags filled with the packaged cocaine.

Police said the vessel was inbound from Ecuador and in transit to Puerto Cabello, Venezuela.

An international investigation had commenced, police said. According to authorities, the seized contraband has since been flown to New Providence aboard an OPBAT helicopter.
